Norton
My name is Norton Fredericks, I am a queer sustainable fibre artist with Indigenous Australian heritage living and working on Kombumerri Country, Gold Coast.
My main arts practice is centred around wool felt making and botanical dyes, my business Retritus offers botanically printed products using Australian native leaves collected on my travels. I particularly love using Irit’s combo mordant technique on cellulose fibres and don’t often use a tannin blanket as I really love a folded mirror design.
Organic cotton handwoven wrap using combo medium and printed using Australian natives (eucalyptus, grevillea, quandong and acacia) and then shibori tied and dyed using a combination of cochineal and oak galls. I really love this work because it gives a layered effect and lots of interest to the fabric.
Handspun and handwoven Ahimsa silk sourced from Assam, India using combo light and Australian natives (eucalyptus, grevillea, quandong and acacia). I particularly love this wrap because it has a 1920s art nouveau vibe to it.
